Bird Traps

Trapping pest birds can be an ideal way to reduce population numbers to support physical exclusion or scare deterrents. However, population control of pest birds by trapping should not be seen as a stand-alone solution. Some systems such as AvePro Bird Spikes, BirdWire and Huntsman and visual deterrents including Eagle Eye will benefit from trapping by eliminating the existing or stubborn birds that are nesting, roosting, and/or feeding on the site. The introduction of onsite traps may be the difference between success and failure of a bird management program. To find out more about the Avepro bird traps, feel free to connect with our specialists. Our bird traps make a practical and effective solution and can prevent birds from landing and nesting on your property.

Variations between the behavioural, animal welfare and legal considerations related to bird species combine to determine the appropriateness of trapping as a population control method. The one scenario where trapping and euthanising is used extensively is when trying to reduce a problem exotic species. Examples include pigeons, mynas, starlings, sparrows, and other exotic birds. Local legislation must be consulted as some pest bird species may be protected.

  • Euthanising techniques and protocols.

Selective Trapping

One major benefit of trapping is that it is highly selective. Through attention to design, placement, region and attracting food source will determine the specific or at least a narrow range of target and non-target species. Moreover, prior to dispatching or processing the catch which in most cases results in the euthanising of birds, non-target species can be removed from the trap and set free.

Bird Trapping Considerations

Trapping is not without its drawbacks and care must be taken in all aspects of this population reduction technique. It should be noted that for the general public seeing birds (healthy or otherwise) in a trap and possibly in some level of distress can be very alarming. If not handled expertly, this can lead to complaints, printed news reports and potential loss of business and negative brand awareness. For this reason, there are strict guidelines to follow when conducting a program. For example:

  • The trap must be covered to protect the birds from exposure to direct sunlight and rain to maintain the health of the birds.
  • The trapped animals must have access to fresh food and water at all times.
  • The trapped birds must be removed from the trap at regular intervals (check with local legislation). As a guide, this will be every 24 hours in most cases.

Trap Sensor technology

New technology in trap sensors such as MinkPolice are now available to alert professionals of the first bird to enter a trap. As it enters, an alert is triggered to your mobile phone. This helps improve efficiency, labour intensity and your animal welfare considerations. For details, please click here.

Collapsible cage traps

Collapsible cage traps are not only ideal for convenient transport and storage, they offer the professional multiple advantages. These traps allow the professional to encourage the birds to feed on the collapsed trap to gain confidence in the trap. A removable door is available, the trap can be disengaged while the birds visit, feed and leave freely which further allows the birds to feel comfortable inside the cage. Once the trap is engaged the birds will continue to enter the cage and are caught until removed. They can hold 12 – 24 pigeons at a time with sufficient food and water.
